The first game in the series not written by Sam Lake or set in New York City, Max Payne 3 veers a little farther from the neo-noir formula into more gritty, realistic territory. The game was directed by Sam Lake, the writer of Alan Wake and Remedy's previous games, Max Payne and Max Payne 2: The Fall of Max Payne. In the first game he is designed after Sam Lake, who created the character's iconic smirk, while the sequel modeled him after actor Timothy Gibbs, though McCaffrey still voiced him. In the sequel he was replaced by chiselled soap opera actor Timothy Gibbs. In the first game, writer Sam Lake provided a now infamous grimace for the character.
