The 1962 Oldsmobile Starfire was an offshoot of that same strategy with a wheelbase that was 3 inches shorter than the full-size 98 series, yet packed all the power of the bigger model. Oldsmobile’s fascination with its performance image began in earnest in 1949 with the Rocket 88 engines offered in the company’s lightest cars.
